- Writing from my K12 Journalism Class
- - "A Brand New School Held the First Democratic Election"
We have many writing assignments on our K12 Journalism Class. We have to write some news articles by ourselves sometimes. And the assignment I want to share with you is the news article I wrote by myself which’s about the first Student Council Election.
The hardest part of writing this is to manage which part should be in which order. I think I did well on my kicker and it ended with a good quote. If I could do this assignment again, I will add more nonhuman source. I learned how to write a whole news article with different sources. And here’s my article. :)

About eight students took part in this election and used many ways, such as making posters, making speeches, to encourage the students to vote for them.
There are two houses in Shanghai United International School US High School, one is Red House, and the other is Blue House. These two houses each chose about four candidates and had a competition in their own houses. The winner of each house would be able to be in the final election. The future president would take a really important role in their school, so they had to make the right choice. And that’s the way the students appropriate chose their leader.
The Red House chose four candidates, each of them were Linda, Garith, Sherry, and William. And the Blue House chose Kathy, Flavia, Volantino, and Alyssa as their candidates. On October 29th, all of these candidates had a competition in their own house and to select the final candidate that would have the final election with the candidate from the other house. Finally, through many speeches, Red House chose Linda, and Blue House chose Kathy. The figure at left shows the situation of the Red House competition. Linda was smiling because she had the most number of supporters. And the figure at right shows the situation of the Blue House competition. Flavia and Kathy were trying to make more students vote for them.
After the competition in each house, the final election came. Each student in Shanghai United International School US High School, whatever the Grade 10 student or the Grade 9 student, would have a right to vote for one of the candidates. And before the final election, all the students in each of the house were trying to make more people vote for the candidate that came from their house. The personal introductions which were sticked on the notice board showed these two candidates’ advantages, hobbies and so on. And the posters that the candidates made also showed the students why they should vote for them. The figure above shows the process which was about Kathy’s supporter was making a poster for her. And the figure below shows Josh - one of Linda’s supporters - was sticking the poster on the window. In order to make more students vote for them, Kathy and Linda tried to get teachers’ endorsements, and that would give them more possibility to win the election.
On November 6th, every student in Shanghai United International School US High School voted on the computer to choose who would be their Student Council President. And finally, through 3-hour voting and statistics, the new Student Council president as well as the first Student Council president in the history of Shanghai United International School US High School had been voted. The winner was Kathy. Cindy was really surprised about this result: “I thought the winner would be Linda, because I think she has more experience than Kathy has.” Mallory showed different opinion about this result: “Kathy is absolutely a good leader. And I think Kathy would win whoever the opponent is.”
“Students would get to know how to show themselves and try to find some merits on themselves,” Richard Eaton, the principal of Shanghai United International School US High School, said, “that’s why we held this election. And once he or she won this, he or she will have to learn how to manage an organization. That is absolutely a big challenge, but it will also be a good practice for the students to be familiar with how to be a good leader, and to be responsible for what he or she is in charge of. That’s really important for everyone.” The principal also said he was really pleased about this: “The election perfectly taught the students what is democracy and what is a democratic election. And it’s really impressed to see that we could hold such a wonderful election in a brand new school.”
